Justice Honorable Uz Husnu Al Suood

Husnu Al Suood became a Justice of the Supreme Court of the Maldives on 8th December 2019.
He was born in 1967 in Meedhoo, Addu Atoll, Republic of Maldives and studied law at the International Islamic University of Malaysia and later at The University of Queensland, Australia.   

In addition to an illustrative career in both public service as well as in private law practice, Husnu Al Suood has also been highly regarded for his academic work in the field of law. In the past, he has served in such distinguished capacities as the Chief Judge of the Civil Court and as the Attorney General of the Republic of Maldives. He has also served as the Chairman of the National Law Reform Commission, President of the Clemency Board, Member of the Judicial Services Commission and as a Member of the Human Rights Commission. A founding member of the Maldives Center for Human Rights and Democracy, the Maldives Law Institute and Maldives Bar Association, Mr. Suood was also a principal referee of the Maldives Law Review.

Prior to the appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court, Mr. Suood served as the chair of the Presidential Commission on Enforced Disappearances and Deaths – a transitional justice body established by the President of Maldives in November 2018.

 As a member of the Peoples’ Special Majlis, Mr. Suood participated in drafting the current constitution of the Republic of Maldives.
